Earnings in financial statements are often referred to by many names, from income, to net income, to net profit, to net earnings. Other common names for earnings in financial statements include operating income, operating profit, operating earnings, and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT). When looking at financial statements, earnings can be expressed in absolute numbers or as ratios such as earnings per share (EPS). Earnings are one of the most important financial measures used to gauge the success of a business. As such, careful consideration should be given to all of its various forms and names.
